[Turbopack: A Rust-Powered 'Successor' to Webpack](https://vercel.com/blog/turbopack) — With over 3 billion downloads, [webpack](https://webpack.js.org/) is the current champion of the bundlers (though [Vite](https://vitejs.dev/) has been rapidly advancing). Vercel found it too slow and has funded work on [Turbopack](https://turbo.build/). It's a project to keep an eye on and boasts huge performance boosts over webpack or even Vite, **but there are some limitations to take into account:**

- It's arguable if it's a "successor" to webpack, as Turbopack can't do much of what Webpack can yet, and while they share a creator, webpack is an active project with maintainers of its own.
- It's _very_ connected to React and Next.js 13 (also released this week – more on that next) – [Vue and Svelte support](https://turbo.build/pack/docs/features/frameworks#vue-and-svelte) is to follow.
- The similarly Rust-powered [SWC](https://swc.rs/) is used to transpile JS/TS.
- Vite's Evan You posted [🐦 a Twitter thread with his thoughts](https://twitter.com/youyuxi/status/1585040261922820096) on Turbopack so far.
- TLDR: Unless you're big into Next.js, stick with your existing tools.

[Node 18 Becomes Active LTS with v18.12.0](https://nodejs.org/en/blog/release/v18.12.0/) — Formerly a ‘current’ release getting all the newest features, version 18 (now codenamed _Hydrogen_) is now the active ‘Long Term Support’ release and will remain so until October 2023.

If you're using an older LTS version and are wondering what Node 18 has to offer, Marian Villa presents [11 Features in Node.js 18 you need to try](https://nodesource.com/blog/11-features-nodeJS-18-to-try), including the `fetch` API, `--watch`, and the native Node test runner.

**IN BRIEF:**

- The SQLite project now has [official WASM/JS documentation](https://sqlite.org/wasm/doc/ckout/index.md) relating to SQLite's [presence](https://sqlite.org/wasm/doc/tip/about.md) in WebAssembly and browser contexts. [sql.js](https://github.com/sql-js/sql.js) has long been the go-to project in this space, but things are heating up.
- CodePen is a perfect place to play with [Preact](https://preactjs.com/) (the smaller alternative to React) – and [Chris Coyier explains how](https://blog.codepen.io/2022/10/27/using-preact-on-codepen/).
- Christian Heilmann reminds us that [`JSON.stringify` can create nicely formatted,](https://christianheilmann.com/2022/10/28/reminder-json-stringify-can-create-multi-line-formatted-and-filtered-strings-from-json/) filtered, multi-line output strings.

[Next.js 13 Unveiled at Next.js Conf](https://nextjs.org/blog/next-13) — [Next.js Conf 22](https://nextjs.org/conf) took place earlier this week and as well as Turborepo (above), Vercel unveiled the latest version of the site framework that has become ['inextricably linked'](https://twitter.com/ascorbic/status/1585004156615479296) to React. It gains:

- Support for an `app/` directory to improve routing, [layouts](https://nextjs.org/blog/layouts-rfc), and Server Components support – can coexist with existing approaches.
- A new [image component](https://nextjs.org/blog/next-13#nextimage) with on-demand optimization and the ability to display images without layout shift.
- A [brand new font system](https://nextjs.org/blog/next-13#nextfont).
